I viewed the images on my old sony dvd player on a 4:3 sony tv, as well as my progressive scan panasonic dvd player attached to a 6:9 hdtv display and they look good on both set ups.īTW, while iMovie can create excellent slide shows, as others have suggested, iDVD has a very simple interface for this as well. I downsampled all my images to 640x480 using Bicubic interpolation in PS before pulling them into iDVD. From my reading, this is (apparently) due to the fact that iDVD, iMovie, etc just throw away data above what is needed rather than doing any intelligent interpolation (at least this was the case before the newer revs). I did test using very high resolutions and actually had worse results. My own testing, and the testing of others in the forums, showed no difference (to my eyes) between 640 and 720. There were some who said that the mpeg encoding that iDVD uses is 720x480 (and 704x480) so that 720x480 would be better and not cause an image to be cropped by iDVD. The general consensus when I last looked was that 640x480 at 72dpi is optimal for iDVD (and television display). There is quite a bit of discussion on this topic if you search the iDVD forums on the Apple support web site.
